Method: live Google SERPs pulled per city for the money term (
drought tolerant landscaping los angeles, phoenix, dallas, houston) on 2026-10-08 (DataForSEO, mobile, top 10). The top 2 organic results that are not directories/forums/marketplaces were profiled at source level — every page, title, meta, H1, schema block, form, phone and guarantee — with map-pack winners recorded as local context. Directories (Yelp, Houzz), social (Facebook, Pinterest), media (Hollywood Reporter), forums (Reddit) and utilities (calwater.com, takecareoftexas.org) were skipped and noted; where organic was too thin, the strongest real company site from the same SERP's map pack was profiled and flagged. Full raw teardowns sit in the Deep Profiles pages.Five Findings
1. The top organic site is often not a contractor at all. Los Angeles #1 (CalWild Gardens) is a Shopify nursery — preplanned plant packs, no phone number anywhere, no LocalBusiness schema — ranking a long-form idea page (“7 Incredible Lawn-Free Frontyards for Southern California”) and converting it with “Shop the Look” product blocks. Houston #1 (EcoLogic Landscape) is a nationwide info-product business (“since 2004 / all 50 states”) with zero phone links and a Calendly funnel selling courses like “Food Forest Mastery”. In LA, 7 of 10 organic slots are directories, media or Facebook. A real local service site with a working click-to-call number is a structural differentiator in this niche before a single page is written.
2. The ranking page is a guide, not a service page — 6 of 8 winners rank with blog content. Victor's Landscaping's “Landscaping Guides” hub (question-format H2s + FAQPage schema + rebate math), Splendid Gardens' Dallas heat blog post (organic #1 and #3), Gardens For Texas' “Drought Tolerant” blog category Google quotes in the SERP, Straight Line Landscape's authored posts (Key Takeaways → table of contents → question H2s → author bio → CTA), EcoLogic's ~50-post blog with state/city category hubs. The template needs a regional drought-guide engine — plant lists by region, when-to-plant calendars, cost content — feeding the service pages.
3. Rebate math is the money content, and nobody frames it as an offer. Victor's Landscaping runs “up to $3,000 back” rebate assistance plus a “Free irrigation check ($90 value)”; Gardens For Texas links the turf-removal rebates at savedallaswater.com inside its xeriscape authority content; Houston Xeriscaping covers TX Property Code §202.007 and Houston Public Works rebates. All three rank on it. None of the three turns it into a lead magnet. “We check your rebate eligibility and handle the paperwork” is the niche's unserved CTA.
4. The conversion split is brutal: qualification machines on one side, nothing on the other. Straight Line Landscape's 4-step quote form (ZIP-code whitelist, project questions, file upload, $20k–$300k+ budget brackets) and Gardens For Texas' contact page (“Minimum of $6,000 required (new clients)”, published estimate→install timeline, fixed Mon–Wed appointment slots, “Must be within Service Area. SEE MAP.”) qualify leads before the call. Droughscape LA's whole funnel is “Request Assessment” → Jobber form → auto educational videos → text follow-up → ballpark cost. Meanwhile phone handling is broken across the field: CalWild has no phone at all, Droughtscape's only number is a sister-brand (“Foundation Repair LA”) cross-promo, Gardens For Texas' number is plain text with no
tel: link, and neither LA site offers click-to-call.5. Below the map pack, proof is a vacuum — warranties and reviews are the free win. Map packs run 47–277 reviews (Houston's top 3 hold 168/55/277) but on-page proof is thin everywhere: Splendid Gardens has zero JSON-LD schema and 3 H1s per page, Gardens For Texas ships zero meta descriptions sitewide and H1 typos (“Tollerant”), Houston Xeriscaping (tagged lead-gen — Duda template-churn with four conflicting phone numbers and a wrong-region hero) shows 2 testimonials and no license. Only two of eight publish warranty terms at all: Victor's (1-Year Workmanship Warranty) and Straight Line (2-yr hardscape, 90-day plants, $75 trip + $45/man-hr non-warranty, verbatim). A named plant-establishment warranty + published cost + review schema beats the entire field.

The Ultimate Drought-Tolerant Landscaping Site
Assembled from the best of all eight sites with the field's shared failures excluded. Every item names its source.
1. Architecture
- Homepage → service hubs (drought-tolerant design · xeriscape install · turf removal · irrigation retrofit · maintenance) — with a real phone in the header (the field's biggest structural gap).
- Regional guide engine (Victor's “Landscaping Guides” + Straight Line's authored-post format): plant lists by region, when-to-plant calendars, question-H2 structure, FAQPage schema, author bio, CTA — every guide feeding a service page.
- Rebate hub: turf-removal and irrigation rebates by city with the paperwork service attached (Gardens For Texas' savedallaswater.com pattern + Victor's “up to $3,000 back” framing).
- Cost content: “drought-tolerant landscaping cost” pages per metro with real bands — the field publishes almost nothing (Straight Line only shows
priceRange: “$50,000 - $500,000”in schema). - Portfolio: 8–10 before/after project cards with neighborhood attribution (Gardens For Texas' 9 portfolio cases is the only real gallery in the study).
- City pages with unique local paragraphs + service-area map (Houston Xeriscaping's 16-city pattern done without the template churn).
2. Homepage anatomy (top to bottom)
- Hero: regional promise + phone (click-to-call) + quote CTA — never sister-brand numbers (Droughtscape) or no number at all (CalWild)
- Trust bar: years, awards, certifications (Victor's ISA / Smartscape / ICPI strip; Splendid Gardens' “Angie's List Super Service Award Winner for 6 Years!” + “As Seen in the Dallas Morning News”)
- Offer band: $250 off installs over $5,000 (Victor's) + free irrigation check ($90 value) + rebate assistance
- Drought-tolerant services with one-line what-it-solves copy
- Regional plant guide teasers (the ranking engine)
- Before/after portfolio with neighborhoods
- Published warranty terms (Straight Line's exact structure: 2-yr hardscape, 90-day plants, non-warranty service rates)
- Review wall + direct Google review link on every page (Splendid Gardens)
- Qualification quote form (budget brackets + ZIP + photo upload)
3. Offer stack
| Offer | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rebate assistance “up to $3,000 back” | Victor's Landscaping | Attach the paperwork service — unserved anywhere as a CTA |
| Free irrigation check ($90 value) | Victor's Landscaping | Low-friction entry offer that finds the retrofit job |
| $250 off installs over $5,000 — booked this month | Victor's Landscaping | The only dated promo found in the field |
| Free strategy session + written plan with cost range | EcoLogic Landscape | 15-min Calendly → written strategy → cost range; the best give-first funnel found |
| Budget calculator + project brackets ($20K–$300K+) | Straight Line Landscape | Qualifies before the call; premium positioning (priceRange $50K–$500K) |
| Published warranty terms | Straight Line (2-yr hardscape / 90-day plants / $75 trip + $45 per man-hour non-warranty), Victor's (1-Year Workmanship) | Nobody else publishes terms — name yours and put the rates in writing |
| Minimum project threshold | Gardens For Texas (“Minimum of $6,000 required (new clients)”) | Publishing the minimum filters leads and signals premium |
4. Trust stack
- Awards and press, displayed (Splendid Gardens' Angie's List 6-year award + Dallas Morning News block; EcoLogic's award strip: Build Magazine 2023, New World Report 2022, Certified Eco-Biz since 2007).
- Named team with tenures (Splendid Gardens' 25 named staff) and founder story (EcoLogic's Jadene Mayla, Univ. of Oregon MLA; Droughtscape's Cody Simpson).
- Certification badges (Victor's: ISA, Smartscape, ICPI + ROC207713 license number in the open).
- Review engine: Victor's self-hosted 865-review system with “88.8% would refer a friend”; Splendid Gardens' direct Google review link on every page. Combine: live widget + always-on ask + review schema.
- Real project photography — before/after sliders (Straight Line) and portfolio case pages (Gardens For Texas).
5. Conversion
- 4-step quote form: ZIP whitelist → project questions → budget brackets → file upload (Straight Line's exact funnel).
- Assessment funnel with auto-education and text follow-up (Droughtscape: request → Jobber form → educational videos → text → ballpark cost → same-day estimate).
- Sticky mobile call/quote bar (Victor's) — and real
tel:links everywhere (Gardens For Texas has none; both LA sites fail here). - Appointment discipline as a trust signal (Gardens For Texas: fixed Mon–Wed slots, published estimate→install timeline, service-area map).
6. SEO & schema
- Question-H2 guides + FAQPage schema + rebate math (Victor's ranking page recipe).
- Full LocalBusiness + Service + Review schema with
areaServedper neighborhood — no site in the study ships complete schema (Splendid Gardens and Gardens For Texas ship none). - Unique meta descriptions everywhere (Gardens For Texas ships zero sitewide; Splendid Gardens' is throwaway “Experience Splendid Gardens LLC”) and one H1 per page (Splendid runs 3).
- Blog category as ranking asset (“Drought Tolerant” category Google quotes directly in the SERP — Gardens For Texas).
- Keep the sitemap honest (Splendid Gardens' ranking blog URL is missing from its own sitemap; Gardens For Texas carries legacy /about-old/ duplicates).
7. Review engine
- Beat the pack counts, market by market: Phoenix 52–263, LA 47–165, Dallas 34–69, Houston 55–277. An always-on ask (per-page Google review link) plus project-photo requests closes the gap fastest.
- Publish the aggregate like Victor's (“88.8% would refer a friend”) — but never hardcode conflicting counts (Straight Line shows 70 on one page, 80 on another).
8. Do-Not list (all observed in the field)
- Don't ship without a local phone and click-to-call (CalWild: no phone at all; Droughtscape: sister-brand number only; Gardens For Texas: text-only phone; neither LA site click-to-calls).
- Don't run multi-brand template churn: wrong-region hero (“Built for the Inland Northwest”), four conflicting phone numbers, a Buffalo septic template leftover and placeholder emails (Houston Xeriscaping).
- Don't skip meta descriptions (Gardens For Texas), ship 3 H1s per page (Splendid Gardens) or put typos in H1s (“Tollerant”, Gardens For Texas).
- Don't put a masked phone in schema (Victor's) or hide the only review link (all of them except Splendid Gardens).
- Don't let the sitemap rot: missing ranking URLs (Splendid Gardens), duplicate legacy paths (Gardens For Texas).

Read the columns: financing is zero across all eight (open lane), published warranty terms appear on exactly two sites, complete schema on zero, and chat on one (an AI widget, Phoenix). The winning combination is structural: regional guide engine (content) + rebate paperwork offer (hook) + qualification quote funnel (conversion) + warranty terms and review schema (trust) + a real local phone (the field keeps forgetting it).
Next Steps
- Template feed: the Ultimate Spec becomes the drought drop's upgrade list — regional guide engine, rebate hub with paperwork CTA, published warranty terms, qualification quote form with budget brackets and photo upload.
- Offer to price: “rebate eligibility check + we handle the paperwork” is the niche's unserved CTA — it is the recurring conversation starter (rebates change by city and year, so the drop ships with a “last checked” stamp).
- Recurring tier: seasonal maintenance + irrigation check-ins (“Free irrigation check ($90 value)” converts to retrofit work — Victor's), plus the review engine against local pack counts of 34–277.
- Compliance note: water restrictions and rebate programs are city-run and change often (savedallaswater.com, Houston Public Works, TX Property Code §202.007) — the template carries the content structure; the buyer localizes the numbers.
- Snapshot discipline: SERPs captured 2026-10-08; re-pull before comparing across time.
